Among the latest releases from the prestigious Milanese label La Bottega Discantica, this recording of the Concertos for the Harpsichord by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (Wq 37 in c minor, Wq 6 in g minor and Wq 18 in D major), performed by Michele Benuzzi and his ensemble Arcomelo, deserves a mention.
The concertos are some of the finest examples of the work of the German composer noted for having left his distinctive mark on the so-called Empfindsamkeit, the movement which swept away music’s Baroque heritage, opening the door to more modern classical forms.
The musicians who have recorded this CD are performing C. Ph. E. Bach’s entire output of concertos for the harpsichord (at least fifty-two) at live concerts; and they play splendidly, appearing totally at ease with the repertoire.
The ensemble’s performance is elegant and light, both during the tutti and when accompanying the soloist. Benuzzi’s interpretation as a soloist is refined and well balanced, and fits into the orchestral framework perfectly.
As soon as you listen to them, it is obvious that the musicians gel: a result, no doubt, of their intense collaboration in live performances.
